The Hot Labs feature provides student users with instantaneous access to labs with all of the software and systems pre-configured. The wait time for some complex instances to instantiate can be several minutes and sometimes up to half an hour, if there is a lot of configuration required. Hot Labs eliminates the wait by allowing a pool of instances to be kept ready for students to grab and start their labs instantaneously. Having a lot of instances sitting idle waiting for student traffic can be prohibitively expensive.
Hot Labs solves this problem by providing fine-grained control over how many live instances to keep in the pool to cover both the initial burst of user activity and the steady state of user demand
User Example #1
Our event kicks off at 9am with 80 students per hour rotating through our hour-long instructor led technical class. We have three classes in the morning and 3 in the afternoon. The individual lab set up time (the time it takes to instantiate our lab and configure lab resources) is approximately 15 minutes per lab per student. With Hot Labs we are able to fire up 80 labs 20 minutes prior to the start of each one-hour class. When our students hit the start lab button they are into the lab instantaneously.
User Example #2
At our customer summits we provide a large room where up to 150 conference attendees can take our self-paced lab. The lab has a set up time of 30 minutes. With Hot Labs we are able to start 100 instances of the lab before the doors open to accommodate the initial burst of students. We also set a steady state target of 50 instances of the lab to be on standby for the students who came and went during the day.
